Rocalles glass beads: seed beads are glass beads made from glass rods up to 30 metres long, but only a few millimetres thick, obtained from soda, potash and quartz sand by melting and pulling. These glass poles are pierced lengthwise with a hole and then cut into thin slices with a diameter of one to about eight millimetres. These discs initially have very sharp edges – after all, they are made of glass. The edges are rounded by placing the beads with limestones in a rotating drum and heating. The beads become soft and the edges are broken by contact with the limestones. Particularly high-quality seed beads are often from the Czech Republic, where the Bohemian glass craft has a long tradition. But also in Asia, seed beads are produced in many colours and sizes. ROCAILLES PROCESSING: The small glass beads can be processed in very different ways. With a very thin needle and thin yarn, you can thread them and use them for both embroidery and weaving.
