Prolonged wetting of the horse’s hair by wet weather and muddy fields leads to softening of the skin, making it susceptible to infection by organisms. If mud fever (also known as pastern dermatitis) develops, the skin can become very inflamed and sore, with scabs developing and the legs becoming swollen. Biteback’s Mudbar range forms a protective layer on the legs, enhancing the skin’s natural barrier function and helping prevent any harmful organisms from reaching the skin in the first place. This particular product, Mudbar Plus, is ideal for skin that is already broken: it cleanses any infected areas, soothes the soreness and softens scabs. Its gentle, non-steroid formulation supports the return of calm, revitalised skin. We recommend applying twice a day to target areas. Carefully remove any mud, wash the area with warm water or Biteback’s Winter Wash, then thoroughly dry – ideally with a drying powder such as Biteback’s Flowers and Zinc – before applying the cream. A clear difference should be seen within a week. Once the scabs are gone, our other product in the range ‘Mudbar’ can be used to discourage re-occurrence.
