Description
The Volkswagen Type 3, generally known as the Volkswagen ‘1500’ and later as the Volkswagen ‘1600’, was a range of cars belonging to Segment D developed by the German car manufacturer Volkswagen and produced in the period from 1961 to 1973. From this range are known its 2-door sedan bodywork, Fastback 2-door, and the 3-door family, called by the manufacturer as Variant. Its fueling system was originally composed of a single or double carburetor to supply fuel to the 1.5 L engine (1500, 45 hp or 1500 S, 54 hp). The cylinder capacity was increased by 1966 to (1.6 L 1584 cc) and was modified by 1968 to include an electronic injection system (Bosch D-Jetronic) as an extra-cost option in the Volkswagen 1600 E (the letter E corresponds to the German word Einspritzung, meaning injection), being the first German car produced in series to incorporate such a system. Also for 1968 a fully automatic transmission was introduced in this car.
