Cos winter density lettuce seed by Mr. Fothergill’s. For early spring lettuces. This hardy ‘cos’ produces heads from March. Crisp, solid and full of flavour. Useful Information: Easy to grow variety; Vitamin A; Vitamin C; Salad bar Sow and grow: Outdoors: sow thinly, August-April where they are to crop, 1.5 cm (1/2-inch) deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, moisture-retentive soil, which has already been watered. Allow 30 cm (1-feet) between rows. Sowings will benefit from cloche or fleece protection and the young plants will suffer less damage. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Thin out to 15 cm (6-inch) apart. Water well until plants are established. Regular sowings, made every two to three weeks, will ensure a continuous supply. Harvest: March-July. Hints and tips: During very cold spells, it is better to sow indoors and to transplant seedlings outside, protecting them with fleece.
