Bill Bowerman, a former sports trainer at the University of Oregon in Eugene, founded Blue Ribbon Sports in June 1964, together with Philip Knight. The company initially marketed Onitsuka Tiger trainers (today: Asics) before they made them themselves under the name Nike shoes in 1971. The sports goods manufacturer quickly realised that the success of the Nike brand is closely coupled with sporty successes. Nike has managed to contract the best of a sport, and is the largest and most successful sporting goods manufacturer to this day.
