TRADITIONAL MAKE & MULTIPLE USES: A handheld percussion of South India, thekanjira, khanjira or ganjira, is a frame drum of the tambourine family. As a folk and bhajan instrument, it has been used for many centuries in India. The kanjira consists of a circular frame made of the wood. It is covered on one side with a drumhead made of goat skin, while the other side is left open. The frame has a single slit which contain three to four small metal discs that jingle when the kanjira is played.

Description

The Kanjira is a selected small South Indian frame drum with a goatskin and two small bells. The traditional lizard skin is prohibited worldwide due to protection of species regulations. Even well-known Kanjira players, however, attest the alternative goat skin great advantages. After playing for a while, the goat skin gets more and more flexible and offers a wider range of possible modulations.
