The story beings on October 26th 1756, When Todd was born to gin-soaked parents in a Stepney slum. until the age of twelve when he was orphaned, Todd endured a poverty-stricken childhood, Fascinated with the instruments of torture at the Tower of London.
He became the apprentice of John Crook, A vicious cutler who specialized in razors, Until two years later when he was jailed for petty theft and sentenced to five years in the notoriously harsh Newgate Prison athe Autumn of 1776, Todd left the prision as a morose, bitter and cruel young man of 19. Following his release he found work as a ‘Flying barber’ and settling in the infamous premises next to St Dunstan’s Church on Fleet Street, Then haven for drunkards and robbers. The shopfront sign read, “Easy Shaving for a Penny – as good as you will find any”, Next to the jars with teeth and blood displayed.
